The HSE and the Legionella Control Association have been actively talking about installation of temperature sensor equipment for some time now. Fitting sensors to strategic points on a water system enables us to minimise risk and ensure compliance, but there are many other benefits that have come to light since these systems have been installed.
Minimising water use and saving energy are at the top of most organisation’s agenda. Fitting of sensors has enabled us to identify the following:
- Where unnecessary flushing is taking place, using up valuable resource time as well as wasting water. It is estimated that on average 7 litres of water is wasted each time an outlet is flushed.
- Where hot water is being continually heated to the target temperature outside of normal operating periods. A hot water calorifier does not have to achieve the target stored water temperature outside of the normal operating period of the organisation and can be turned off overnight or at weekends for instance. As long as the water is heated back to the target temperature by the time the premises is occupied then this is sufficient.
- Rationalisation of the number of water assets we have on site should be an objective for anyone responsible for running a water system. The fewer assets you have, the less risk you have (and also you have less to maintain!). Sensors have allowed us to determine assets that are no longer required and we have been able to advise building managers planning for future refurbishments and system adaptations.
