Introducing Hydrocells: The Smart Rainwater Harvesting Solution

Invented by Andrew Turner Inventions Ltd and designed and installed by Managed Water Services Ltd, Hydrocells is an innovative rainwater harvesting system created specifically for commercial businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and minimize environmental impact. Our smart system not only provides a sustainable solution for water management but also helps to alleviate the stress on local sewer systems by reducing Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) incidents.

How Hydrocells Works

Hydrocells utilises a two-tank configuration to effectively manage rainwater collected from commercial rooftops. The system is tailored to each property, with tank sizes optimised based on roof area and annual rainwater capture potential:

1. Rainwater Collection Tank:

This first tank gathers rainwater from the roof. The water is recirculated through a glass media filter, ensuring it reaches the desired turbidity level for safe use.

2. Advanced Filtration with Glass Media Filter:

The glass media filter continuously recirculates the rainwater, improving its clarity until it meets the system’s turbidity standards. The filter is equipped with a backwash function for self-cleaning, which helps maintain its efficiency over time. Additionally, it features a self-sterilising capability, ensuring the filtration process remains hygienic and effective.

3. Clean Water Tank:

Once the water in the collection tank meets quality standards, a multiport valve diverts it to the clean water tank, where it is stored for future use.

4. Chlorine Dioxide Treatment:

The clean water tank features a Chlorine dioxide dosing loop, which doses at 0.5 ppm to maintain low bacterial levels, ensuring safe water for non-potable use. The Chlorine dioxide level is continuously monitored, dosed on make-up, and adjusted by monitor control for precise, effective treatment.

Smart Technology and Data Management

Hydrocells is equipped with a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), an interactive dashboard, and a mobile app to provide comprehensive system monitoring and control. These tools offer valuable insights for businesses:

  • Real-Time Monitoring: Track the system’s performance, water levels, and filtration status.
  • Water Savings and Carbon Offset Calculations: The dashboard and app calculate the amount of water saved and the corresponding reduction in carbon footprint, providing businesses with tangible data to support sustainability initiatives.
  • Remote Access and Control: Manage and adjust system settings from anywhere via the app, ensuring optimal operation.

Storm-Ready Technology

Hydrocells is linked to the MET Office, enabling real-time storm forecasting and intelligent water management. Before a forecasted storm, the system automatically reduces the level in the rainwater collection tank by releasing some water, ensuring there is adequate storage capacity for incoming rainfall. This proactive approach helps the sewerage system better cope with the increased demand during storms or rainfall, reducing the risk of CSO spills by managing excess roof runoff.

Environmental and Commercial Benefits

  • Reduce Your Carbon Footprint: By harvesting and reusing rainwater, businesses can significantly decrease their reliance on mains water, cutting down on energy consumption associated with water processing and distribution.
  • Prevent CSO Incidents: With smart tank management, Hydrocells helps maintain local water quality and minimizes flooding risks associated with urban runoff.
  • Data-Driven Sustainability: The system’s built-in tools offer valuable insights for calculating water savings and carbon offset, making it easier for businesses to track and achieve their sustainability goals.
  • Customizable System: Tank sizes and system configurations are customized for each property, ensuring optimal performance and sustainability.
